This work was created during an artist’s residency in Mexico, where I asked a local weaver to make a fabric piece the length and width of me and the colour of my skin, and to help me make the same of her. I filmed her during the process, and taught her to use the camera to record me weaving the piece that represents her.

The project explores the power dynamics within portraiture as well as between the Global North and South, and the tension between fine art and craft as modes of making. I’m interested in the push and pull between intimacy and distance that I believe governs all human interactions, in the awkward sincerity of speaking across languages, and in what can and cannot be exchanged, shared or equated.
