ARTWORK > Immanence

A series of interviews and portraits of women in Russia, all of whom work in different capacities related to the oil and gas industry. Gender relations evolved differently to the West during communism, and then changed dramatically post-perestroika. I was interested in photographing and interviewing women who have experienced this cultural change.

Resource extraction is a traditionally masculine industry, and hugely important to Russia's economy. These female employees range from engineers to managers and administrators, they all had different perspectives on their country and their relationship to that frequently feminized cultural concept, 'nature'.
